The general objective of SONO project is to apply at semi-industrial level a sonochemical technology patented at laboratory level by the project coordinator, Bar-Ilan University in Israel.
This objective materialized in the building of two pilot technological lines that are based on sonochemical process which serves to deposit on textile materials nanoparticles of metal oxides such as zinc and copper oxides. The metallic oxides coating confers antimicrobial functionality to the textile materials and open the possibility to use them in the medical sector

The SONO project developed two ultrasonic pilot lines, based on different ultrasonic transducers:

  • The one existing in Romania was based on magnetostrictive flat ultrasonic transducers.
  • The other one existing in Italy was based on piezoceramic tubular ultrasonic transducers.

During the project woven textiles made of cotton and PES/CO blend were impregnated with metallic oxides, such as zinc oxide and copper oxide by the two ultrasonic equipments. Also the combined use of a biopolymer, such as chitosan and MeO Nps in the ultrasonic bath was studied in order to improve the antimicrobial functionality of the textile materials.
Experimental results have shown that the Nps of metallic oxided embedded in the textile fabric by means of ultrasounds exibit excellent antimicrobial activity even after 60 cycles of washing.

Innovative aspects:

  • The development of sonochemical technology at semi-industrial level, a technology with a major potential for textile industry and also for other industries. In order to build the technology for depositing nanoparticles by means of ultrasound generated energy, a multidisciplinary and cohesive approach was adopted, starting from engineering design, surface chemistry, nanostructures, life cycle and costs evaluation studies and medical studies that involve the analysis of physiological parameters that are important for detecting and monitoring nosocomial infections.

Results obtained by INCDTP

  • Definition and implementation of a methodology for the investigation of nanomaterials. INCDTP has identified and elaborated an experimental matrix to test nanomaterials with antimicrobial function obtained by the ultrasound application, starting from the technical structure of the textile backing (physical-mechanical, physical–chemical parameteres) to the functionality structure (characteristics of nanoparticles) of  the textile materials.

  • Acquisition of a know-how referring to nanotechnologies applied on textile backings by ultrasounds, including analytical aspects referring to the understanding of the behaviour of various textile backings upon depositing nanoparticles of MeO.

Infrared thermography (IRT) applied for analysing the thermal transfer through a textile material coated with CuO

  • Characterization of the antifungal efficiency of the Nps coatings according to ISO 20743 standard against Candida albicans AATCC 10231
